Frankie

For those of you that don't know, Frankie is our dog.  We got him from Stokenchurch Dog Rescue on March 31st and he has quickly become a part of our family - for better or worse.  He is a Collie and we suspect he is crossed with another breed.  He is mainly black and tan but has patches of white on his feet and tummy.  He is roughly a year old and we decided to make his birthday the day we brought him home.

Frankie's Background

Frankie was originally a stray dog from Ireland.   Over there, if a dog isn't rehomed within 5 days, it gets put down so a lot get shipped over to England to places like Stokenchurch Dog Rescue (SDR) or the Blue Cross.  At some point last year, Frankie (formerly Frank) was rehomed with a different family.  I've heard two different stories but they both end up at the same point - Frankie being caged 24 hours a day.  Someone reported the owners to the police and so Frankie was sent back to SDR.  Whilst the police investigation was underway, Frankie had to stay up at SDR so when we looked at him, he'd been there a couple of months, if not longer.  When we went to look at dogs, it was obviously important for us that whichever dog we chose, would get on well with Elizabeth.  Her and Frankie seemed to get on well and we decided to bring him home with us. We picked him up on March 31st.

Training

Frankie really enjoys the training that we do with him and has picked up some of the commands really quickly.  We are using the clicker method and so when he's doing really well, he ends up having a lot of treats!  We're currently looking into doing some agility training with him as we think he'll really enjoy the challenge.  I've really enjoyed training Frankie and have a feeling that I'll enjoy the classes almost as much as Frankie will.

Elizabeth

Elizabeth is very excited to have Frankie around and can often be caught giving him a kiss or cuddle, or encouraging Frankie to give her a kiss back (so lots of licking of her face).  Frankie puts up with a lot from her including the affectionate 'ear pull', 'eye gouge' and 'tail yank'.  These two actually get on so well with each other that they sometimes drive me mad!  They follow each other around and Elizabeth often gets knocked over because Frankie gets so excited that he doesn't realise his bum sticks out behind him.  He'll turn around and his bum knocks Elizabeth over but usually she just gets up and gives Frankie a big hug.  If I separate them to give them each some space (and myself too!), they'll both be found by the gate, often with their hands/paws through the bars.

I have no doubt that they'll always be best buddies.

The bad side of Frankie

Frankie has one major flaw and unfortunately it's a bad one.  When we leave him alone in the house, he has a tendency to destroy things.  He doesn't do it every time and there also doesn't seem to be a pattern as to when he will wreck something.  It's usually just a cushion off the sofa - and the same one as well - which we can cope with.  He's also had a go at my handbag but I can't really blame him for that one.  I had left it on the sofa but I think E undid the zip and there was chocolate inside.  I guess it was just too tempting for Frankie!

However, I was almost in tears on Monday when I came home from visiting a friend to find a sea of destruction in the living room.

As you can (perhaps) see from the photos, Frankie didn't just wreck a cushion this time.  He had torn apart a 'thing' that had hundreds, possibly thousands, of tiny white polystyrene balls in it.  That's what looks like snow in the photos - they were a pain to clear up.  He attacked several of E's toys, destroyed a pot plant, chewed up some other bits and generally left a lot of mess for me to clear up.  I was very far from happy.  And the worst part?  He didn't even TOUCH the chew toy that I left for him!

Every time I leave the house, Frankie gets left with a Kong, a chew bone that apparently tastes like chicken, a dog toy, a rawhide chew and some biscuits or a pigs ear for him to eat.  He doesn't behave badly because he's hungry or because he needs to go up the garden.  I thought maybe he needed a longer walk in the mornings but that hasn't solved the problem either.  We're still debating the next step....

20 week scan

We had our 20 week scan yesterday, also called the Anomoly Scan.  The basic idea is that they check the baby is developing well and that there are no obvious signs of trouble.  There are some illnesses, like Spina Bifida, that can be detected at this time.  Thankfully there was nothing sinister that showed up on our scan but our little monster was being a bit awkward and there was one test the sonographer couldn't complete so we're heading back in three weeks' time.

Considering how active the baby has been (I'm getting kicks all over the place), it was remarkably still for the scan.  We got a good image and are pleased that the baby appears to be well.

Ah, the money train that is Nursery begins

I love the nursery that E is attending.  She goes twice a week - Monday afternoons and all day on a Wednesday - so I can get some work done.  She has a fabulous time and even after mashing her finger, she'll come home with a smile on her face.  The staff are great and they've helped to introduce E to some new foods as well.  I do find that she'll eat a lot of things at nursery that she turns her nose up to at home, which is frustrating but at least she's eating.

I bought E's first piece of nursery memorabilia today.  It's a tea towel with all the nursery children's drawings on.  E's class are too small to draw a picture of themselves so they have either a hand or footprint.  So very cute!  It's the first thing that we've been given the option to buy but I know that this is just the start.  As she gets older, it'll get worse as well.  There'll be fancy dress days that you donate money for and cake sales where you buy back your own cakes.  There's school photos as well and you don't want to forget what your child looked like when they were 7 so you buy the school photo every year.  The school trips - oh the school trips!  They get bigger and better as the child gets older, so I'm guessing they get more expensive too.  I already knew all this, I'm prepared for it, but I wasn't expecting it to start at the grand ol' age of 16 months.  Now I understand why the cost of raising a child is so high.

In the meantime, I'll enjoy smiling every time I look at my new tea towel.

So much to tell...

We've had a very busy few weeks here at family HQ.  It's mainly been lots of rushing around, work, pregnancy sickness on my part and E being ill.

I'll start with the pregnancy news.  Yes, I'm pregnant again!  I must be insane....  I really enjoyed being pregnant with E and am very excited to be pregnant again, although it's quite a different experience this time around.  The sickness itself has been more intense this time but hasn't lasted for nearly as long, which is grand.  I'm approaching 19 weeks and was only just starting to feel normal at this point when I was carrying E.  I've been feeling pretty good for quite a few weeks now but am also feeling very tired.  I didn't have a toddler or a dog to run around after last time so going to bed at 9pm is fairly normal for me right now.

And that brings me on to the dog!  We have been wanting a dog for a long, long time but whilst in the falt, it obviously wasn't possible.  We're now in a lovely house and decided to take the plunge, even with the new baby coming in September.  We realised that if we didn't get the dog now, it would be a good number of years before we did and even then there was no way of knowing what our lives were going to be like once baby number 2 was a couple of years old.  There could be something else stopping us so we contacted Stokenchurch Dog Rescue and have rehomed a beautiful Collie called Frankie.  He has a lot of energy but has settled in very well.  I'll post more about Frankie in the future.

E being ill was a really horrible couple of weeks.  It started about 3 weeks ago with what I thought was teething.  E would occasionally cry for no apparent reason, had three short naps rather than one and was a little off her food.  She went to bed early on that first night as she was pretty knackered but ended up having a very bad night.  We were up with her a couple of times before we went to bed ourselves.  She was clearly in some pain so we gave her some medicine and took turns settling her back to sleep.  We also changed her into some lighter sleep-wear as she felt quite hot.  All through the night E would have periods of crying, meaning that neither her nor us got much sleep.

The following day, she was no better and had a high temperature.  A quick trip to the doctors told us that she had an ear infection and we just had to wait it out.  That was a Friday.  She actually had a very good weekend but had a bad turn again on the Monday.  After about 10 days, things were finally settled down but it's only been the past couple of days that E has really been herself.  Now she seems to be having a growth spurt as she's eating like a horse and sleeping for England!

I'll update you all with photos soon.

A nothing post

So I'm laying here in the bath, wanting to read but our Kindle is broken. I'm very precious about 'real' books you see, so taking one of those in here with me is a big no no. Luckily I have a tablet with the Kindle app so that will be a good enough substitute. Or so i thought. It turns out that the tablet is just a bit too heavy for comfortable reading whilst laying in the bath so I'm easily distracted and end up writing this nonsense blog post.

I've been wanting to get back to my blog for quite some time now but every time I think that I'll write something, I have no idea where to start.  I guess the problem is that I've been away from the blog for so long that I feel there is so much to update you on but I can't seem to sort the important stuff, from the boring stuff, from the 'you don't want to know that' stuff. I guess that's where this random post comes in. I'm bored in the bath with very few choices about what to do.

I'm not going to bore you with details of our planned weekend or our up coming holiday (but boy am I excited!) I'll just leave this as a 'nothing' post and start blogging real stuff again.  I just needed that way in.

First Word and More Teeth

I know I've been very naughty and haven't written on here for a while so I thought I'd let you know that E now has seven teeth!  Teeth 5 and 6 came through together a couple of weeks ago and then we got number 7 a few days ago.  I can see 8 and 9 are very close to coming through but for now, E isn't suffering like she did with number 5.  That top tooth was horrible and gave E problems for almost two weeks.

Last week we also heard E's first word.  She's been making lots of noise recently, with a few ma-ma-ma's and da-da-da's but nothing that could possibly be 'mama' or 'dada'.  Until now.  I was holding E and she looked at Frans, stuck out her arm towards him and with a big smile said 'mama!'  Now obviously I'm mama but I've been told it's common for babies to get mama and dada the wrong way round, which I can understand.

Well done Elizabeth!

We did say she likes her food...

I had E weighed yesterday by the health visitor.  Since birth, E has been tracking her 'very average' weight curve on the graph.  She never deviates.  The last time I had her weighed was 8 weeks ago and we had just introduced a third meal into her day.  Again, a nice average weight of 17lb 14.5oz (8.125 kg).  She now weighs 20lb 1.5oz (9.11 kg) and has jumped up to the next percentage line on the graph.  It's hardly surprising considering the amount of food she puts away.  I'm actually a little pleased as she's starting to fill the clothes she has, rather than being too long and skinny for everything.  Carrying 9kg can be a bit tiring though.
